This illustrates the currency conversion of a crude benchmark. Pump prices also reflect refined wholesale fuel, tax, distribution, stock timing and retail pricing. These charts do not establish a causal link or forecast pump prices.

READING THE MOVEMENT

Prices change.
Coverage can change too.

The latest view includes every eligible forecourt we can place in a UK region, across all retailers. Earlier dates use the records available for that day. A changing average can reflect both price movements and a changing mix of stations, so keep an eye on the counts.

Reporting under the government’s Fuel Finder scheme became mandatory on 2 February 2026 for UK forecourts selling petrol or diesel to the public. As records from more forecourts become available, coverage and the mix of stations can change. This atlas also depends on the records we receive and retain, and our location and freshness checks. Its counts are not a measure of scheme registration or compliance, or of how many stations submitted an update that day. A missing forecourt does not by itself mean it has failed to report.

The fixed historical comparison follows the same 3,084 forecourts from 28 February to 15 September 2026. It offers a separate view of price movements without stations entering or leaving the sample.

The latest view uses open, active forecourts with valid locations and eligible recorded petrol or diesel prices. Prices need a usable source timestamp within the past 14 days. Missing, invalid, future-dated and stale prices are excluded. Petrol and diesel counts can differ; the diesel premium uses only stations with both fuels. These are equal-weight averages, not an official or sales-weighted measure.

History has a different clock.

Earlier dates reconstruct each station’s last recorded price at the UK day’s close, carrying it forward for at most 30 elapsed days. Price-change records are not daily confirmations. Today’s active status is not applied backwards; current locations are used. Historical coverage depends on retained records and can vary substantially. Gaps remain gaps. Today is an incomplete day and uses the current-price rules.

Oil, currency and geography.

Brent and pound-dollar figures use stored daily market observations, with the verified historical source file filling earlier gaps. Each chart displays its observation date: these are published benchmarks, not live market quotes. Earlier observations carry across non-publication days, never backwards from the future. Full ONS ITL1 boundaries assign regions; simplified outlines are used for display. Height shows the selected measure, not elevation.
