Petrol and diesel prices have edged lower in Fuel Finder's latest UK figures. The movement is small, but it offers an early sign that the recent rise may be losing momentum.
What has changed?
The UK Fuel Price Index shows these average reported prices:
| Fuel | 6 October | 8 October |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol E10 | 175.0p per litre | 174.9p per litre |
| Diesel B7 | 200.1p per litre | 199.9p per litre |
The index's comparison of the same stations over seven days shows petrol essentially unchanged and diesel down 0.2p per litre.
That points towards prices levelling off, with a little easing in diesel. It does not yet establish a sustained fall. Today's figures are still partial, and the daily trend table's station coverage changes slightly.
The increases had already been slowing
The recent Price Pulse reports show progressively smaller weekly rises:
| Week ending | Petrol change | Diesel change |
|---|---|---|
| 20 September | +2.9p | +4.6p |
| 27 September | +1.6p | +3.0p |
| 4 October | +0.7p | +0.8p |
Prices were still rising in those completed weeks, but by less each time. The latest small dip follows that slowdown.
These weekly editions are frozen reports with their own station groups. Their headline averages should not be directly subtracted from the live index to calculate a price change.
What does it mean when you fill up?
For now, the national movement makes very little difference to a tankful. A reduction of 0.1p per litre saves 5p on a 50-litre fill. A reduction of 0.2p saves 10p.
Checking nearby prices can therefore be more useful than waiting for another tiny change in the national average. As a simple example, a station charging 3p less per litre would save £1.50 on the same fill, before any extra travel costs.
If you need fuel, compare stations along your usual route and check when their prices were last updated. A small national fall is not a reason to assume your nearest forecourt has already reduced its price.
